After two years, we were able to hold the Annual Garden Party of the Friends of Hopetoun Crescent Garden yesterday, and folks arrived in their Sunday finery as usual. Hats were not obligatory, but they made this into a fun, celebratory occasion after months and months of pandemic isolation. The rain even kept off, and we were fortunate for lovely spells of warm sun whilst our two musicians Elspeth Porter & Bill Wallace entertained us during lunch with some serene accordion music.
The weather had been carefully monitored by a local resident, the retired metrologist, Alex Hill, so despite the heavy rain on Saturday threatening cancellation at the last moment, there was no need to do so.
The 3 Ps were there also in the food tent for all to enjoy. Pizzas, Pastas and Prosecco generously donated and served up by our local Italian restaurateur Vittoria’s of Leith Walk.
Our local MP Deirdre Brock and MSP Ben MacPherson mingled among local residents and Friends of the Garden catching up after so many months of isolation.
In the worker’s tent, plans for the garden were displayed, together with photographs of some of the activities that had taken place over the year, by the committee, volunteers and the corporate team of abrdn plc ( Standard Life Aberdeen).
A new innovation this year, photographic views of the garden by the artist Jenny Bruce were on sale in the form of Greetings and Christmas Cards.
The trees were even decked with bunting and many of the GREEN FLAGS the garden has received over the years previously were on show.
Even clearing up after a successful day turns out to be fun.
Do watch how a gazebo can be dismantled so quickly, All the noisy clicks and bangs are not it breaking as I thought, but it has a clever way of assembly and dismantling. This amazing piece of kit was kindly leant to us by local residents and members of the Friends Heather and Jordan.
A great day was had by all and we send our thanks and appreciation to all our sponsors, supporters and donors of plants, bushes and wood chip.
Roll on our next event.
Photos of the event will be posted over the next few days
