The Friends go West!

On Wednesday 29th May, seven Friends of Hopetoun Crescent Garden took the 44 bus out to the Water of Leith Visitor Centre at Slateford for our Annual Walk.  There we met up with Helen, our walk leader, and experienced a truly wonderful walk with a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic leader.

Less than 10 minutes into the walk upstream, we spent a lot of time watching a female otter1otter as she hunted for fish – and learnt that female otters like about 24 miles of river to themselves!

We learnt a great deal about the history of the Water of Leith; of the mills along its length; of the various wealthy land owners and the flora and fauna of the river.

It was an inspiring, over an hour long walk, and we wished more members had been able to come along.

Thanks to Olive Hill for organising and especially thanks to Helen Brown  for opening our eyes to the beauty on our doorstep.

There are a some pictures from the walk in the Gallery here.

Scott Thomson (our Park Officer) offered HCG these tree markers to replace the very badly vandalised plaques, and, after a lot of thought and after one destined for Figgate Park was brought to HCG for the Committee to see, we were pleased to say yes.

They will obviously weather in time and we hope that the ‘wood’ rubbing of the leaves will be liked by young folk and other brass rubbing enthusiasts.

Garden Party 2018

Well the rain held off and the sun made a few brief appearances. The day was well attended and despite the fact that the band couldn’t make it the conversation flowed and all enjoyed a fun afternoon.

Any more photos will be gratefully received and added to the gallery.

Much thanks again to Vittoria’s for the fabulous food and wine, and Happy Birthday Tony!
